I have about $160-180 to spend on a CPU/board for a budget Intel gamer. I can get an 1150 ATX board for about $50,
...so this leaves ~$110-$130 for a CPU
The two CPUs I'm considering are:
Intel Pentium g3258 Haswell Dual-Core 3.2GHz LGA 1150 53W ($70)
Intel Core i3-4160 Haswell Dual-Core 3.6GHz LGA 1150 54W HD4400 ($120)
I hear that Pentium is a fantastic overclocker but as this PC won't be at my house aftre the build, I wouldn't go too crazy with it. Maybe bump it to 4.0ghz. The i3 has decent onboard video (backup) and hyperthreading. I want to say that chip would be a decent gamer already with a proper GPU.
I have no experience with the recent, cheaper Intel offerings so I'm wondering what people think the best budget CPU would be in this instance.
FYI - I know he plays WoW but I don't think he's playing anything on PC that's terribly demanding (yet)
The other specifics (if it matters)
A friend wants me to build a gaming PC for her (12 year old) son with a ~$250 budget. We have some old parts and spare parts, my main question is what CPU I should go with. I really like the idea of future-proofing by using an 1150 socket so we could throw in an i5/i7 down the road. The PSU is going to be a bit weak, so the power hungry and poor upgrade path AMD CPUs are out (unless someone can convince me otherwise).
We already have
Mid Tower case
Optical drive
OS (win7)
Hard drive
All peripherals/monitor (900p)
May use:
One of my spare video cards.
There is a power supply in that case but I don't think I'm using it (some junk brand 450w).
I can get 8gb of ram and a decent 500w PSU for about $90
