GTX980 and 4K gaming on Samsung UE40HU6900

mercredi 6 mai 2015

Hey guys,

just thought i should share my experience with my new Samsung UE40HU6900 running on my Asus GTX980 4GB.

1. 60Hz works

It works but you need to set it up correctly in the TV menu using the right HDMI connection - named HDMI (DVI) on the backside - in this case HDMI 2.

On the remote select SOURCE -> HDMI 2 and keep holding the enter button until a little menu pops up. Select EDIT and select PC as a name for HDMI 2.
That will disable all image cleaning algorithms and so gets rid of input lag.

Normally my first attempt was to search for a GAME MODE setting which you'll find under SETUP -> GENERAL but that is greyed out. Apparently that only work when the tv is running at 1080p with upscaling.

Doesnt matter though, using HDMI (DVI) in PC mode will give you the same experience since i didnt notice any lags ingame (Skyrim) or on the desktop at 4K.

2. Enable UHD COLOR.

That's the next thing you should enable. I think that was under PICTURE options, easy to find. It states you should only enable this after you've disconnected the HDMI cable but just do it anyway. You can check this via the INFO button on the remote - it should say UHD COLOR ON or something afterwards.

3. Don't use a HDMI - HDMI cable

It seems the GTX980 only enables HDMI output after windows switched to a 16:9 resolution, so after a pc restart you'll be greeted with a black screen during bootup until you need to enter your windows pw.

If you dont want that use a HDMI - DVI cable. I use a HDMI highspeed cable from Amazon Basics. Now you'll see all the boot screens in their pixellated glory.

4. Motion will look differently than on a crisp monitor

I've replaced my 2560x1440 monitor with this tv so it took some time to get used to how the tv displays motion on screen.

Every moving object on screen will look slightly blurred and darker. Black objects will draw shadows behind their path of movement. Once something stops moving, it's back to being sharper and lighter. In Skyrim this means: moving your head around will get you a motionblur effect on the whole screen and stopping your mouse will light the whole picture up. If you move and stop your mouse very often it will appear as flickering.

That put me off quite a bit. So egoshooters might not be a good idea on this tv at 4K. Racing games & RTS should be fine i guess.

What i did was to play shooters on reduced 2560x1440 resolution - that gets rid of the flickering effect and still looks great (to me). GTA V in 2560x1440 looks awesome, as does AC4 BlackFlag. Moving cars or ships on screen will look like in a movie because of the motionblur effect - i liked it, but it's surely not for everyone.

All questions or more infos welcome. :)
