HD 5870 horizontal lines on desktop after start - solved

vendredi 10 avril 2015

Hello,

I had a problem with my HD 5870, I managed to solve it, and decided to share it here so maybe it will be helpful for someone.

Right after start (boot) on the Windows desktop I was getting black horizontal lines (few of them in different locations). Restart was solving the problem. If I did not restart, my PC usually crashed after some time, especially when starting a game (I was getting a BSOD).

Also, even after restart, I was getting black flashing rectangles (few of them on the right side of the screen) when I was browsing (IE, Firefox, Chrome).

I found some info that those problems may be related to the low temperature of the card at startup (which sounded strange to me), or to the low clocks values.

My solution was to increase the clocks values:

I downloaded the BIOS from my HD5870 using CPU-Z.

Then opened this BIOS in RBE (Radeon Bios Editor).

In RBE I found about seven different clock values (about seven "clock infos" with different clock values).

I changed all of them to be the same as the highest clock values and voltage values I found there.

I uploaded modified BIOS to my HD5870 using ATI Winflash.

About one week of testing and everything is O.K. : no horizontal lines, no flashing rectangles, no crashes.

Downside: I cannot overclock the card now, as overclocking (using CCC) causes crashes, despite the temps are O.K.. Also, I guess there is some small increase in energy consumption, but at least there is no increase in upset and anger of the end user :)

Have a good day!

Juliusz
