Hello, I will be purchasing a laptop soon and I have some issues with this as I cannot find what I want.
What I need:
An i7 (quad!).
8 GB of RAM but it won't bother me if it has more.
17-inch FHD monitor (or above I guess).
NO dedicated GPU.
Would be nice if it would have an SSD included, if not I'm gonna buy one anyway.
Optical drives are optional.
Prefer 802.11ac connectivity (dual band), but not a major issue if it doesn't support this.
Decent build quality.
A bit of explanation.
- I need a quad i7 because I generally do CPU-intensive tasks. I am a web programmer by profession, but I also use 3D graphics and DAW software (as hobbies).
- This is also why I require at least 8 GB of RAM.
- FHD or above because I basically need the desktop space, 1366x768 (my current laptop has this) is definitely not enough. And I would definitely prefer something bigger than 15 inch.
- I won't game on this laptop, aside from a bit of CS and DOTA when I'm visiting my parents (during holidays mainly). So an integrated GPU would most likely play those games on low settings with pretty decent framerates.
- Well, an SSD makes everything faster. Especially queries directed at the big databases that I use at work.
- I can install things from a stick.
- 802.11ac simply because my home network consists of a gigabit connection and a gigabit router. But not necessarily crucial since I won't be moving huge amounts of data on/from it.
- I don't think I need to explain the last point.
Maybe an illuminated keyboard but this is definitely a caprice.
Some brands I prefer.
My current laptop is an ASUS and I have a good opinion about ASUS laptops in general. They are popular here because their laptops seem to be pretty damn good.
Lenovo is also a popular brand and probably for good reason.
I will not buy acer, period. I think every person I know who's had an acer has had various problems with them.
And I tend to avoid toshiba. I don't know about their quality, but most of their laptops seem to have the exhaust vent on the right side which is a stupid decision if you ask me. I don't want it throwing hot air right on my mouse hand.
HP, great design but I've seen huge problems with the cooling solutions, especially the thin Pavilions.
Dell, same as above. I know that the Quad-core Inspirons from 2011 had huge overheating issues. Sure, the inspirons aren't great looking either but it's not all about design.
And I won't buy an Apple laptop. Not feasible in my opinion.
Budget, around 1000EUR.
And please do note that I live in Romania. I cannot order custom laptops from manufacturers that have their offices in the Americas (HP, Dell). The shipping tax would murder me.
Now as I said, the issue that I'm having is that I can't find what I need. What happened to the laptop market? 3 years ago I had great deals without dedicated video cards and with quad-core i7s. Now I mainly see gaming laptops with quad-core i7s. The hell's going on?
Any suggestion is most very welcome. You can link to any shop in the world, I will search in my local retailers' lists.
